What is Annual Giving?
Village Academy Annual Giving is the foundation of our giving program; it bridges the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. It differs from other fundraising efforts because it directly funds the School’s current operating budget. Annual Giving dollars are used where the needs are greatest and can also help VA respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances. These tax-deductible contributions make it possible to provide our students with extraordinary programs, opportunities, and academic instruction.
Unlike Capital Giving that collects pledges over a period of years to directly fund long-term projects such as new construction, Annual Giving is money to cover the school’s current year operating expenses.
What is the “gap”?
The “gap” refers to the difference between tuition income and the actual cost of educating each child. The gap for the 2018-19 school year is $1324 per student. We encourage families who have the means to give the “gap.”
My family is already paying tuition. How does my child benefit when we make a gift to the VA Annual Giving fund as well?
As a not-for-profit organization, Village Academy does not receive state or federal funding. Current tuition revenue covers a portion of the operating cost of our school and any gaps between the projected and actual operating cost are covered via the school’s fundraising efforts – primarily the VA Annual Fund.
Every child at Village Academy benefits directly from the gifts made to Annual Giving. Whether the funds are spent on enrichment, extracurricular activities, advanced learning opportunities, or information technology, Annual Giving allows us to provide the finest education for each and every student at Village Academy – from Preschool through Grade 12. Remember that you are making a charitable contribution and that your gift is tax deductible as allowed by law. This is one of the few opportunities you have to make a gift that directly impacts and benefits your child.
Why not just increase tuition?
Village Academy values its economic diversity and raising tuition would likely result in the loss of valued students whose families could not afford the increase. Additionally, your contributions to our Annual Giving are tax-deductible, and we would rather encourage parents to make tax-deductible gifts and keep tuition affordable while maintaining the superior quality of education for every child.
Why is your participation so crucial?
Participation in VA Annual Giving demonstrates your confidence in the Village Academy mission to educate college-bound students who function as responsible, compassionate citizens of the world. It also increases the likelihood that VA will receive funding from corporations and foundations who ask about our participation rate before providing us with additional funding. With a strong annual giving participation, prospective families, major donors, and charitable foundations are more likely to give to Village Academy.
I can’t afford to give much. Will my gift really make a difference?
YES! Each and every gift truly does make a difference. Every contribution, no matter how small, counts toward our participation rate. The only gift too small is the one not made at all.
Will I be asked for money at other times throughout the year?
There are a few other opportunities to give by attending and supporting our yearly events, and we do hope that you will consider supporting each of them. However, Annual Giving is the lifeblood of our school and our primary fundraiser, which is why we ask for 100% of our parents’ participation.
I volunteer a lot of time at Village Academy. Doesn’t that matter as much as giving money?
Village Academy relies heavily on its parent volunteers to help with virtually every aspect of our school. From Griffin Athletic Club members and classroom volunteers to VPO members and special event volunteers, you play a critical role in the life of our school. Your financial support is another important venue to make a significant impact on the life of the School and the future of the children at Village.
When should I make my gift?
Annual Fund contributions directly affect our operating budget. We regularly reevaluate our budget and make adjustments if funding is not on track. A pledge is a commitment to make a gift. By letting us know in the fall that we can count on your support this year, we can budget accordingly and ensure that all of our programs and activities are fully funded. Pledges can be paid any time before the end of our fiscal year on June 30. Contributions made before December 31, 2018, are tax deductible for 2018.
What is the dollar goal for the VA Annual Giving?
Annual giving goals change yearly, but their purpose remains constant – to sustain the Village Academy tradition of excellence. The total goal we are asking our current families to contribute to the 2018-19 Annual Fund is $200,000.
Who gives to Annual Giving?
Many people support VA in their philanthropic efforts. 100% of our board of trustees and 100% of our faculty and staff are expected to give to the Annual Fund. In addition, we are seeking contributions from current families, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and many local corporations.
Can my gift be matched?
Many corporations will match their employees’ gifts, dollar for dollar, or sometimes even a rate of 2:1. Please ask your payroll administrator or human resources department if your company matches gifts. It usually takes only a few minutes to fill out the form and make a greater impact.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes, Village Academy School is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, so your contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
What is the best way to make a gift to the Annual Giving Fund?
