The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program on Wednesday, September 13, 2017. Village Academy is proud to report that senior, Nikhil Parail, was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist for the 2017-18 school year.
According to the NMSC, these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Finalists will be announced in February and all National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists.
Nikhil has attended Village Academy throughout his entire academic life. He is president of Key Club and National Honor Society at the School, and he enjoys tutoring other students through NHS. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Nikhil has been the captain of the Cross Country team and a two-time regional qualifier in the 800m for track. Nikhil has played both the alto and baritone sax in the VA varsity jazz band since the 8th grade. He’s competed at the Ohio Music Education Association’s Solo and Ensemble competition since his freshman year and has earned the highest possible rating all three years.
If that’s not enough, Nikhil also scored a PERFECT 36 score on the ACT. When asked how he felt when he received the news, he said, “If I recall correctly, I think I jumped out of my seat and audibly yelled at 1:30 AM! I had a good feeling about the test, but I never expected a score that good.”
Congratulations, Nikhil on becoming a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist! Village Academy is proud to have you as a Griffin. #GriffinPride #IamaGriffin
