Friday, January 20th the Village Academy Mock Trial teams competed in the 2017 Ohio High School Mock Trial Competition. This is a statewide competition with more than 3500 students participating each year.
Student teams, comprised of five to eleven students, participated in two trials in which they represented both the prosecution and the defense in a fictional court case. The students were given written materials to study and use while presenting their cases to a three-member panel of local attorneys serving as judges for the competition.
Village Academy has participated in the Ohio Mock Trial competition for 13 years. This year, fourteen students between two teams represented VA. For many of these students this was their first competition. They spent a great deal of time learning first hand about court procedures and the law. Many of these students have gained an interest in law from this experience and will return to compete next year.
Each trial is awarded an Outstanding Witness and Outstanding Attorney certificate. Village Academy is proud to announce that senior Ellie Hull was named Outstanding Attorney and for the third straight year, junior Elise Salisbury was named Outstanding Witness for their roles in the afternoon trial.
Congratulations, Ellie and Elise, and to all who participated. Many thanks to Mr. Michael Salisbury for advising this outstanding group of students and to Lower School parent, Ms. Lori Braunsdorf, for donating her time to assist in the preparation as the teams’ legal advisor.
