What is Annual Giving?
Village Academy Annual Giving is the foundation of our giving program; it bridges the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. It differs from other fundraising efforts because it directly funds the School’s current operating budget. Annual Giving dollars are used where the needs are greatest and can also help VA respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances. These tax-deductible contributions make it possible to provide our students with extraordinary programs, opportunities, and academic instruction.
Unlike Capital Giving that collects pledges over a period of years to directly fund long-term projects such as new construction, Annual Giving is money to cover the school’s current year operating expenses.
What is the “gap”?
The “gap” refers to the difference between tuition income and the actual cost of educating each child. The gap for the 2017-18 school year is $1974 per student. We encourage families who have the means to give the “gap.”
Why not just increase tuition?
Village Academy values its economic diversity and raising tuition would likely result in the loss of valued students whose families could not afford the increase. Additionally, your contributions to our Annual Giving are tax-deductible, and we would rather encourage parents to make tax-deductible gifts and keep tuition affordable while maintaining the superior quality of education for every child.
Why is your participation so crucial?
Participation in VA Annual Giving demonstrates your confidence in the Village Academy mission to educate college-bound students who function as responsible, compassionate citizens of the world. It also increases the likelihood that VA will receive funding from corporations and foundations who ask about our participation rate before providing us with additional funding. With a strong annual giving participation, prospective families, major donors, and charitable foundations are more likely to give to Village Academy.
I can’t afford to give much. Will my gift really make a difference?
YES! Each and every gift truly does make a difference. Every contribution, no matter how small, counts toward our participation rate. The only gift too small is the one not made at all.
When should I make my gift?
The school, and thus Annual Giving, operates on a fiscal year that runs from July 1 – June 30. Early pledges and gifts are encouraged. Contributions made before December 31, 2017, are tax deductible for 2017. However, pledges can be paid until June 30, 2018.
What is the dollar goal for the VA Annual Giving?
Annual giving goals change yearly, but their purpose remains constant – to sustain the Village Academy tradition of excellence. The total goal we are asking our current families to contribute to the 2017-18 Annual Fund is $180,000.
Who gives to Annual Giving?
Many people support VA in their philanthropic efforts. 100% of our board of trustees and 100% of our faculty and staff are expected to give to the Annual Fund. In addition, we are seeking contributions from current families, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and many local corporations.
Can my gift be matched?
Many corporations will match their employees’ gifts, dollar for dollar, or sometimes even a rate of 2:1. See your human resources office for more information. The list of all corporations in the area that participate in matching funds can be found at www.villageacademy.org/match.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes, Village Academy School is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, so your contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
